How to Craft a Culture that Will Attract Millennials

How to Craft a Culture that Will Attract Millennials With millennials making up a significant chunk of the workforce today, its important that employers take into consideration what attracts them to a company, what motivates them and what encourages them to stay in a job. Though they want a lot of the same things from a job as previous generations, they tend to look for a lot more innovation and flexibility in a job, as well as looking to climb the career ladder at a faster pace. If the company culture does not suit the needs of millennial employees, it is likely that they will seek out new opportunities that are a better fit and a high turnover rate can be incredibly costly for a business, as well as disruptive. In order to retain their staff, employers must adapt their culture to meet needs and preferences of their millennial staff, so how can they go about this? Here are Rakunas top 4 tips for creating a culture for millennials.  1) Open communication Encouraging open communication in the workplace is a great way to make employees feel engaged and loyal to the company. By allowing all employees to share their thoughts and ideas, they will feel more valued and like they are making a proper contribution to the business. 9 out of 10 employees are more motivated when they know where their work is going and want their superiors to listen to their ideas. 2) Remove hierarchy Millennials dont have the same regard for authority in the workplace, as their older counterparts and prefer for everyone to be at the same level in terms of treatment and interactions. 79% of millennial employees would like their boss to behave as a mentor to them and if the table was turned 76% think their boss could learn a lot from them. 3) Flexibility Millennials have more of a work to live than live to work attitude, so they look for a job that allows them to have a good work-life balance. Employers can take this into account by offering flexible work hours, or the option to work remotely. 89% of millennials would prefer to choose when and where they work, than a 9-5 office based job and 77% say flexible work hours would make them more productive. 93% also say that they want a job where they can be themselves and dressing comfortably plays a part in that. 4)  Encourage friendships at work Build a sense of community and encourage friendship among colleagues by holding social events, such as work parties, drinks after work, team bonding activities, etc. These will help to break down barriers and allow employees to get to know each other on a more personal level, which will build a stronger team. 90% of millennials want a workplace to be sociable and fun.

NYC Help With Writing a Cover Letter and ResumeIf you are looking for NYC help with writing a cover letter and resume for a job that you are applying for, there are a number of things that you will want to know. The first thing that you need to do is to determine what type of cover letter and resume you will be submitting for consideration of the job you are applying for.A cover letter should be a one page document that identifies who you are and what you can do for the company. The cover letter should clearly outline your qualifications, skills, and past experiences. You will need to highlight what you are qualified to do and why they need to hire you.Now you will want to turn your resume in and you will want to take a look at it again. It might seem simple but many times we are very rushed when applying for jobs and it is easy to lose track of what you are trying to achieve. Also make sure that it clearly states your skills and education. Making sure that your resume is clear and concise is important when submitting it for consideration for a job.You should also be sure that it tells the reader everything that you can about yourself. Do not leave anything out and be as detailed as possible. Top tips to get you LinkedIn

Top tips to get you LinkedIn Weve been pretty animated by the topic of social media in Careers Skills recently and I think its fair to say were trying to update, upskill and upgrade! Some of us are more keen than others to like it, tweet it and pin it but one thing were all agreed on is the need to get LinkedIn. So over to Anne for a quick guide to the worlds leading professional network. Managing your professional online presence is no longer an optional extra with  53% of graduate recruiters using social media to check out potential applicants. Students and graduates have woken up to this and are joining LinkedIn in their droves. And you can see why: LinkedIn is an effective way of developing and increasing your online connections. It can help you find people who share and may potentially advance your career interests.  Over  175m professionals use LinkedIn, with more than 2 million companies having webpages ignore it at your peril! If youre a complete novice,  YouTube  has some great tutorials including this one: We think LinkedIn is a great way to establish and cultivate a professional profile (and network), but you need to know your way around. Here goes: Google yourself first.  Before you expand your online presence further, see whats already there. Check your digital footprint whats left behind for others to see? Adjust your privacy settings, and carefully manage what appears online. And remember: tweet in haste, repent at leisure! Create a professional profile. Do yourself justice think about the image you want to project. If you have a blog, twitter feed or visual CV, this can be a good way to draw attention to it just make sure the content is recuiter friendly. If not, the lock down rule applies. Upload a photo of yourself people are more likely to connect with a real person than a silhouette. Just make sure the photo is professional no drunken party pics. One of our  job search advisers  will be happy to check your online profile and see if it ticks the right boxes. This will form part of your application check though, so youll need to attend the  effective applications  workshop first. Generate career ideas.  If youre still weighing up your options or looking for inspiration, LinkedIn can help here too. Type job roles in the advanced job search to type in job roles and this will take you to profiles of LinkedIn members. This can give you a great insight into peoples career paths. You can also use the search to generate opportunities. Looking for an internship? A quick search yesterday (29/10/12) found 106 UK internships, many for summer 2013. Research companies.  Use the LinkedIn company pages to help you find out more about an organisations size, employees, locations, culture, jobs and more.  Find out which companies are in demand, as well as current trends. Use this information to help shape your applications, and put you ahead of the field. Expand your job search.  Increasingly recruiters are using LinkedIn to advertise positions through their corporate pages and groups. LinkedIn enables you to join relevant groups and subgroups of organisations youre interested in. Through these groups and associated news and discussion threads, you can glean a lot of valuable, insider information. Perhaps youre looking for an internship? A quick search yesterday (29/10/12) generated 106 intrernship opportunities in the UK, many for summer 2013. Build your contacts. Always personalise your request and offer a reason for your approach. Use other contacts to broker introductions for people who are not listed as a level 1 contact. Mind your manners.  There is such a thing as  LinkedIn etiquette   follow it! LinkedIn can be a source of opportunities for graduates, but its considered ‘bad form’ to ask contacts directly for a job. However, it is ok to ask for help, advice or expertise. Connect with alumni.  You may well come across Warwick alumni when researching companies and organisations. Politely request to link (avoid the standard, impersonal message) and you may find theyre willing to share job search strategies or application tips.  Tap into groups: Advertising Professional has over 80 000 members so theres a pretty good chance youll stumble across some Warwick grads. Just find your niche. Get recommended.  If you have completed a work placement or internship, and feel you demonstrated your capabilities and potential, perhaps ask your manager for a testimonial. This is a great way to secure a credible, professional endorsement publicly viewable by potential recruiters. Avoid spamming employers with requests though; be selective about who you approach. There are plenty of online guides to help you avoid the pitfalls, but how to ask for a recommendation on LinkedIn is really succinct and digestible. Manage your Apps.  Use LinkedIn Apps to share files, showcase what youve done and promote your brand i.e. YOU! Put yourself in the driving seat I think its easy to exaggerate the influence of social media on employers recruitment practices. Were still some way adrift of the US, where an overwhelming proportion of employers make positive and negative decisions based on an applicants digital profile (at least according to a  2009  Microsoft survey), but you wont have the luxury of knowing which employers choose to scour through myriad social networks, and those who dont. Assume theyll be checking and you wont got far wrong. And bear in mind LinkedIn appears very high in Google searches, so if employers  do  look, youve got a great chance to make a positive first impression!

Humanities Alumni Video Project at The University of Manchester Jades story University of Manchester Careers Blog

Humanities Alumni Video Project at The University of Manchester Jade’s story University of Manchester Careers Blog My name is Jade and I am in my final year studying Linguistics. I knew from the beginning of second year that I wanted to do something productive with my summer, to boost my CV and skills before I entered the dreaded final year. I found out about SEI’s when I was walking through Sam Alex one day after a lecture in December and I noticed a Careers Service stand (I believe it is there every Wednesday). I decided to ask the lovely Career Consultant if she could give me any advice about how to make the most out of my summer and that’s when she told me about SEI’s. Throughout the Christmas period I worked on my CV and when I returned I booked a CV advice session; then I was all ready to start applying for the summer internships! I joined the Facebook pages which are updated with all the new internships and there was one which caught my eye â€" the Humanities Alumni Video Project. This internship genuinely interested me and it had exactly the kind of work experience I needed for my future career prospects. I applied for the internship and I was invited for an interview. About the interview For the interview, I was so nervous and even worse the interview took place on Friday the 13th! I remember it raining heavily and walking into the interview looking like a downed rat. Firstly, I was asked to complete a small task which was to write a mock email to a potential alumni volunteers and a mock brief for the filming sessions, after that they asked me the typical questions about why I was suitable for the role and my relevant experience from my education and part-time jobs. A few days later, they offered me the internship, I was so happy to be taking on a role that required so much responsibility. My internship My internship started at the beginning of June and the first few days involved introductions and getting to know everyone in the department. On the first week, my colleagues took me out for lunch to make me feel at home and by the end of the week, I was going out after work for drinks! One piece of advice is to say yes to the social events right from the beginning of your internship, it is a great way to get to know people and also do some sneaky networking… My main role was to project manage a series of Alumni-based, career videos to promote Humanities degrees. The videos are used as a student recruitment tool to demonstrate the wide variety of careers you can enter after studying a Humanities degree. I had to liaise with the Marketing Team and the Alumni volunteers, to coordinate the entire filming schedule. I also had to attend the filming sessions with the film crew, ensuring the volunteers felt comfortable and that the content we recorded fitted the brief. Best bits My favourite part of the internship was attending the filming session and meeting all the Alumni, I got to visit fantastic companies such as the BBC and top marketing companies in London. It was also incredible to hear the career stories of Alumni who studied Humanities degrees, it was extremely inspiring and gave me confidence for my own future! I was so sad when my internship ended, I loved everything about my role and my line manager even generously gave me some fantastic leaving gifts. However, a few weeks later, they offered me a part-time position for my final year to assist with Alumni-based events. This is great as I am still gaining invaluable skills and I still get to work for such a fantastic team. I would definitely recommend an SEI if you wish to do something with your summer. It’s a brilliant way to boost your confidence, boost your CV, to meet other interns and take advantage of the help The Career Service offers while on the internship. Ode to Technology

Ode to Technology Technology, technology.   Who cares, right?   It is all changing so quickly, how can we keep up with it all.   Maybe thats what makes it fun. I recently saw a new way to view the news. All you need to do is hover over a box and see a snippet more info and click on the box for a link to the source of the story. Then, again from Twitter, I saw news about Googles Wave.   Not yet released, but coming this year. Google says: A wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more. Wave seems like part blog, part email, part IM, part Twitter, part Facebook all wrapped into one. These tools help us share information faster and farther.   They enlighten and de-burden. Thomas Friedmans book, The World is Flat, talks about how the internet has flattened the world by providing more equal access to information. We should understand how technology impacts our world and our lives so we can better prepare for the future.   With all this flattening, there are so many more opportunities for everyone to find creative ways to make money.   You no longer need to have a store front to sell things or a large budget to promote your business.   You can sell almost anything on-line with the thousands of tools available. Keep learning and following!

Tailor Your Resume CareerAlley

Tailor Your Resume CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. ** This article originally appeared on the blog **Onlinecareertips.com** By Jessica Bigger Online Career Tips, Guest Contributor The job market has gotten more competitive. Hundreds of applicants are applying for each job and those same job applicants are expected to not only meet the minimum requirements, but demonstrate significant skills related to the job description. So what can you do? Increase your chances of getting an interview by tailoring your resume. How do you tailor your resume? By pulling the keywords from the job description and using them in your resume and your cover letter. Tailoring Your Resume Now, Im assuming if you are reading this you have a strong resume that is focused in the field you are applying to. For me, its marketing. For others it might be IT. Regardless of field its important to pay attention to detail. Remember to include your accomplishments instead of your skills. For example, Managed over 8,000 marketing projects resulted in a 35% increase in sales over the past year would be a great inclusion. This will give the hiring manager something tangible to latch onto. If you are able to add in results driven data in your resume make sure to do so. This could be the difference between getting a call for an interview, and being thrown into the pile. There are several reasons to tailor your resume: Your resume might be scanned by an automatic system searching for keywords A HR recruiter might be looking at your resume searching for those keywords No keyword stuffing or overdoing it, HR will pick up on that tactic and pitch your resume How to find the keywords: Highlight the keywords in the job description Create your own word cloud to identify the most important words Most of the keywords you are looking for are in the job summary and description. Usually the keywords are nouns and adjectives, but it doesnt hurt to use some verbs in the description like managed, initiated, etc. Just mix them up. Find Keywords in the Job Description Once I have my keywords I will scan my resume to see if I can replace similar words. I will then go back and look at the keywords and job description, and see if there are any new accomplishments I should add that will demonstrate that I have done a particular skill listed on the job description. Finally, I go through my resume and remove any accomplishments or other information that is not related to the job that I am applying to. This way I stay focused and create more white space. Find Keywords Using a Word Cloud You can also use a word cloud by copying the job description and requirements (if you like) into a word cloud program. I use Wordle.net, but you can also Google word cloud and find other programs. From there you can paste the job description and/or requirements into the word cloud program and hit enter. There will be a lot of words. The larger the word the more often it has been used in the document and the more important it is. These large and medium words are what you want to use in your resume. Just make sure you still look at the actual description before applying those keywords into your resume. Below is a brief excerpt of a real life Communications Manager job description. The words highlighted in blue are some of the important keywords to use in a resume. Communications Manager Job Description: Responsibilities Include: Work directly with key HR business partners to develop communications strategy and tactics that support overall plan/program and enterprise goals. Direct major communications initiatives from concept to execution. Responsibilities may include comprehensive communications strategy development, key message development, writing and designing materials, efficient utilization of employee communications channels, and coordination of reviews, approvals and distribution of materials. Collaborate across communications teams to ensure programs are in sync with enterprise communications strategy and tailored by lines of business when needed. Work with internal and external graphic and video service providers. Lead cross-functional communications project teams. Tailoring your resume will increase your chances of getting an interview, but like anything else there are no guarantees. Its very important to tap your network and it wouldnt hurt to sign up with a couple staffing recruitment agencies, preferably ones that specialize in your field. You increase your odds when you apply several different approaches during your job search. Best of luck.
